Richmond Bridge is a Grade II* listed structure which spans the River Thames in London, England, connecting Richmond in the south to East Twickenham in the north. It is a three-span arch bridge made of masonry, with a total length of nearly 100 metres.

The bridge was built in 1777, replacing a ferry service which had operated since the 16th century. It was designed by the Scottish engineer James Paine, who had previously worked on the nearby Hampton Court Bridge. The design was approved by the architect Sir William Chambers, and the bridge was opened to the public in 1777.

The bridge has a very distinctive look, with three arches of varying sizes which span the river. The central arch is the highest and widest, measuring 60 metres in length and 13.7 metres in height. The two side arches are slightly shorter and narrower, measuring 50 metres in length and 10.7 metres in height. The entire bridge is constructed from stone and brick, with a cast-iron balustrade running along the top.

The bridge quickly became a popular destination for sightseers and tourists, particularly during the 19th century. Its picturesque location and attractive appearance made it a popular spot for painters and photographers. In 1819, the poet John Keats wrote the famous lines “O for a beaker full of the warm South,/ Full of the true, the blushful Hippocrene” while sitting on the bridge. It was also the inspiration for the nursery rhyme ‘London Bridge is Falling Down’.

In the early years, the bridge had a toll gate which collected a fee from anyone wishing to cross. This was abolished in 1859, and the bridge became free to cross. The bridge is now open to pedestrians and cyclists, although vehicular traffic is not allowed.

The bridge underwent major refurbishment works in the late 1980s, when it was closed off to the public for a period of two years. During this time, the stone and brickwork was cleaned, repaired and replaced where necessary. The cast-iron balustrade was also replaced, and the bridge was repainted to its original colour.

Today, Richmond Bridge is one of London’s most iconic landmarks. It is a popular spot for sightseers and tourists, and is well-known for its picturesque views of the Thames. The bridge is also a popular spot for weddings, although this has been put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a Grade II* listed structure, it is protected by law and will remain a part of London’s history for many years to come.
